Bat Yam

Bat Yam Israel, located just a few miles from Tel Aviv, is home to a variety of sea, beach, land, and air sports. You can try many of them free of charge during July and August at various places on the beach and along the promenade. Besides many of the more commonly known sports like gymnastics and beach volleyball, there are also unusual ones like Pétanque. Pétanque is a form of boules (French for the collective name of games played with metal balls) where the goal is to throw hollow metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet or jack, while standing inside a starting circle with both feet on the ground. It’s a challenging and fun way to spend time after you tire of the beach.

Nine Bat Yam Beaches to Enjoy

There are nine beaches in Bat Yam including:

  1. Yerushalayim,
  2. Sea Palace,
  3. Hasela,
  4. Ledugma,
  5. Riviera,
  6. Hanifrad,
  7. Marina,
  8. Hadekalim, and
  9. Taio beaches.

Hanifrad beach offers women-only swimming on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and men-only swimming on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. July and August hours are 8 am – 7 pm; parking is free on weekdays and Friday parking is 10 NIS for Bat Yam residents and 20 NIS for others.

Bat Yam Sports

During the months of July and August, you can enjoy the following beach sports for free at 106 Ben Gurion Street on the promenade:

Pétanque: Monday 9:00 am-11 am (with professional guidance), 6 pm-10 pm, Tuesday 9 am-11 am, Wednesday 6 pm-10 pm, and Thursday 9 am-11 am; Tai-Chi, Sunday 7 pm-8:30 pm

Chi-kung: Sunday and Monday 6 am-7:30 am, Wednesday 7 pm-8:30 pm; Yoga, Thursday 6 am-7:30 am and 7 pm-8:30 pm; Gymnastics, Tuesday and Friday 6 am-7:30 am

Physical fitness: Tuesday 7 pm-8:30 pm and Wednesday 6 am-7:30 am

Nordic walking with ski poles:  Tuesday 9:30 am; Pilates, Monday and Tuesday 7 pm-8:30 pm

Matkot: Israeli beach tennis, can be found all over the beaches, any time of day or night

Down the promenade at 96 Ben Gurion Street is the Bora Bora swimming pool, and a bit further down, at 126 Ben Gurion Street, you’ll find a Petanque playground. You can also try Body Building, Sunday 5 pm-8 pm. At the southern end of the promenade, make sure to go to 10 Hekomemiyut Street, where you’ll find the Country Club with a gym and pool, a tennis center, football and basketball courts, and a skate park.

Nearby, at 7 Menachem Begin Street, you’ll find the soccer stadium. The Mini Pitch, a synthetic grass playground with plenty of space for playing sports is also in the area, at 8 Moshe Sharet Street.  For more information contact or by phone 057-734-7700.

Laguna Sports Club in Bat Yam

Situated on the Sea Palace and Taio beaches, the Laguna Sports Club has a surfing and sailing club, sells and rents water sports equipment (including used equipment), and offers sea-sports lessons.

You can also enjoy many water sports on the beach including surfing, wind and kite surfing, SUP (stand up paddle board) surfing, kayaking, snorkeling, sailboats and catamarans.  Contact by email, or phone at +972-3-659-9895.

Flying High in Bat Yam: Parachuting and Paragliding Club

The Agur Parachuting and Paragliding Club has the most advanced store in the country for selling paragliding equipment, and it also offers equipment storage. If having your feet firmly planted on the ground is more your style, you can watch paragliding, air gliding, and parachutes in the sky throughout the day. Contact the club at +972-54-245-4346.

Bat Yam Israel Trivia: Did You Know?

During the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci designed parachutes and a flying machine for humans, which was the forerunner of the paragliding sport.
